Liam Henderson’s Journey into Ultra-Endurance

Liam Henderson is no stranger to pushing himself beyond the limits. A 27-year-old personal trainer from Melbourne, Liam’s journey into ultra-endurance sports started in an unexpected way.

‍

From Team Sports to Solo Endurance Challenges

Growing up, Liam played footy, cricket, and basketball. But when the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to traditional sports, he found himself searching for a new challenge. That’s when he turned to running.

Rather than easing into the sport with a half marathon or marathon, Liam did what few would dare—he Googled the hardest races in Victoria. The result? He signed up for his first 100km race, diving headfirst into the world of ultra-endurance. Four years later, he’s still going strong.

‍

Discovering Hardcore Harry’s & King of the Hill

Liam first came across Hardcore Harry’s through Ethan Fleming, whose extreme challenges had already caught his attention on Instagram. When he saw Ethan posting about Hardcore Harry’s, he knew he had to get involved.

That led him to King of the Hill, a grueling endurance event where 100 competitors push themselves to the absolute limit. The atmosphere at the event immediately captivated him.

“There’s something special about being surrounded by like-minded people who are all there to test themselves,” Liam says. “It creates an incredible energy that lasts the entire weekend.”

‍

The Appeal of Last Man Standing Races

King of the Hill and other Last Man Standing events offer a unique challenge. Competitors start together, but as the laps go on, the field thins out.

“In the early laps, you might be chatting with people who are just there to experience the event for a couple of rounds,” Liam explains. “But as the race goes on, you find yourself running alongside people with serious endurance experience. It’s fascinating to see how everyone’s journey unfolds.”

For Liam, the toughest part of these races is the mental challenge. Unlike a standard marathon with a fixed finish line, Last Man Standing events bring a level of uncertainty that can be mentally exhausting. “The unknown is what really gets to you. You have no idea how long you’ll be out there,” he says.

‍

Hardcore Harry's & the Drive to Improve

As a member of the Hardcore Harry's Ambassador Program, Liam is thrilled to be part of a community that shares his passion for endurance sports.

“The Hardcore Harry's represent people who want to push themselves to their absolute limits,” he says. “Whether it’s King of the Hill, a 24-hour push-up challenge, or running multiple marathons in a month, it all comes down to testing your limits and growing from the experience.”

Liam’s motivation for tackling extreme endurance events stems from a deeper personal drive. “There was a time when I felt like my life was a bit underwhelming,” he admits. “I wasn’t happy in my job, and I wanted something more. Ultra-endurance racing gave me a way to channel my energy into something positive and challenging.”

The constant progression and self-improvement keep him coming back. “No two races are the same. You’re always dealing with different conditions, mental states, or even injuries. Every race is a chance to learn something new about yourself.”

‍

Looking Ahead: Dead Cow Gully & King of the Hill

Liam’s race calendar for the year is stacked. In July, he’ll be taking on Dead Cow Gully, a Last Man Standing event featuring some of the best competitors in the world. After that, he’ll return to King of the Hill, aiming to push himself even further than before.

“The goal is always gradual self-improvement,” he says. “I want to see how far I can go this time and test myself all over again.”

‍

The Hardcore Harry’s Community

For Liam, the most exciting part about working with Hardcore Harry’s is the people. “Everyone in this community is focused on becoming better, pushing themselves, and seeing what they’re capable of,” he says.

As he continues his journey in ultra-endurance racing, Liam is eager to see where his limits truly lie. With a relentless drive for improvement and the Hardcore Harry’s community backing him, there’s no telling how far he’ll go.
